It depends on how the situation was presented. I think the msg here is "don't ignore the significance of birth family" or at least "don't bad mouth the birth family". It's important to remember that not all birth parents "chose" adoption or "made a plan." It's challenging for adoptive parents to express positivity at times when their child was adopted through foster care because the birth parent has/had substance abuse issues. What's important is to do your best to find anything positive! Even to tell a child "hey, you have your birth mother's eyes. Their so pretty!" can mean the world to them.
